Blanche C. Matthias

"Don't let glaucoma blind future generations as it has blinded me." —Blanche C. Matthias

With a simple act of personal commitment, Blanche C. Matthias became a catalyst in the quest to find a cure for glaucoma.

Through her bequest, Drs. Robert Shaffer, H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr. and John Hetherington established Glaucoma Research Foundation in 1978. They were concerned about the lack of any real hope in new treatments for their patients. What was needed was a foundation that could take a leadership role in fostering new research.

Blanche was the perfect catalyst for such a vision. Originally from Chicago, by all accounts she led a spirited, action-packed life. She fearlessly traveled to the far corners of the world, ardently championed the new art and artists of her day, and was even a published poet and essayist.

Blanche C. Matthias, indeed, was a remarkable woman. Her generosity and visionary spirit created an institution that has been a beacon of hope for glaucoma patients and a leader in glaucoma research for the past 35 years.

Your own personal legacy can sustain this vision, and write the next chapters of Glaucoma Research Foundation's endeavors to envision a life without glaucoma through the continued investment in innovative research and essential patient education programs.
